Hunter Royer enters his 14th season as head coach of UAH baseball in 2022-23, having amassed a career record of 360-238-2 in 13 campaigns with the program. Royer became the all-time winningest coach in program history on March 1, 2019 at Christian Brothers with his record 277th victory, and he notched his 300th career win on Feb. 22, 2020 against Union.
Through 13 seasons as head coach, Royer has guided the Chargers to the NCAA South Regional in 2012, 2014 and 2021 as well as a GSC Tournament Championship in 2014 and appearances in the GSC Tournament Championship game additionally in the 2012 and 2016 campaigns. In all, Royer has coached two MLB Amateur Draft selections, five All-Americans, two GSC Players of the Year, one ABCA, D2CCA and NCBWA South Region Player of the Year, two GSC Freshmen of the Year, and 41 All-GSC honorees.
UAH made a strong run at the GSC tournament in 2021 after clinching a postseason berth following a 19-8 record to wrap up the season, as the squad was led by All-South Region performers Garrett Bodine and Landon Ezzell who both topped 115 total bases on the season. The Chargers finished with a record of 28-25 and 16-13 in GSC play.
After the 2020 campaign was cut short due to COVID-19, UAH reached the NCAA tournament for the first time in seven seasons in 2021 with a berth to the South Regional as the squad accumulated a record of 23-20 and 16-14 within the GSC. Coach Royer's squad also boasted All-South Region honorees Garrett Bodine, Colin Brewer and Carson Villalta.
UAH went to the GSC tournament for the eighth time with Royer at the helm of the program in the 2019 campaign, as he also achieved his program-record setting 277th victory on March 1 in a win over Christian Brothers. The Chargers had a pair of standout outfielders in Nolan Ramsey and Tyler McCown who each earned All-GSC recognition.
The Chargers finished the 2018 campaign with an overall record of 24-22 and 13-16 within the conference, highlighted by three GSC series wins including the final set of the campaign against rival North Alabama. Senior AJ Walden garnered his first All-American nod in his four-year career, while becoming the program's leader in home runs with 49 career round-trippers.
UAH reached the GSC tournament for the seventh straight season under Royer in 2017, as the squad owned a record of 24-26 and a 15-18 mark in league play. The Chargers received a trio of All-GSC performers in Tanner Burns, Will Myers and AJ Walden, and each player would earn All-South Region recognition as well.
The Chargers enjoyed another successful season under Coach Royer during the 2016 campaign, as the squad boasted a 33-20 overall record and a 21-12 conference mark while reaching the GSC Tournament Championship for the seventh time in program history. Royer - who won his 200th game during the 2016 campaign - had a total of four players earning All-Region, five All-GSC honorees and one MLB Draftee in Wilson Adams.
Royer continued to mold UAH into one of the most distinguished programs in Division-II collegiate baseball, as the squad was ranked in the top 25 nationally for the duration of the 2015 season. His players received a lot of recognition following the 2015 campaign, including All-American distinction for seniors Chandler Brock and Colton Simbeck. Huntsville native Daniel Koger also became the program's first draft pick (19th Round, Colorado Rockies) since the 2004 season, while four-year reliever Luke Mould capped off an incredible career with CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America honors and the GSC Commissioner's Trophy. The Chargers prolific offense led the GSC with a .339 batting average, reaching the conference tournament with a 36-11-1 overall record and 21-9-1 within the league.
He had one of the most historical seasons in program history in the 2014 campaign, which was highlighted by his team capturing the 2014 GSC Tournament Championship, just the second conference title all-time in UAH baseball history (2001). The Chargers finished the season with a 41-16 record, including two victories at the NCAA South Regional and a 13-game winning streak late in the year.
In 2013 he saw his team reach an historic ranking of No. 4 and finishing with back-to-back 30-win season, while having Chandler Brock earn Player of the Year honors on four platforms and also garner three First Team All-American honors.
In 2012, Royer led the Chargers to their first 30-win season since 2004, where his squad finished third at the NCAA South Region and was GSC runner-up.
Royer served as interim head coach in 2010, before being appointed to lead the Charger baseball team in 2011.
He served three seasons as assistant coach at UAH, including the 2009 season where he was named the top collegiate assistant coach in the state of Alabama by the Alabama Baseball Coaches Association. Royer took over the reigns as interim head coach midway through the 2010 season, leading the Chargers to a 15-13 mark including the program's first GSC Tournament win since 2003.
Following a three-year stint at Gulf South Conference foe West Alabama, Royer joined the UAH baseball coaching staff as the Chargers' top assistant in the fall of 2006.
Royer helped lead West Alabama to back-to-back NCAA South Central Regional appearances in 2005 and 2006, along with the 2005 Gulf South Conference championship.
A 1995 graduate of Sweetwater High School in Sweetwater, Tennessee, Royer received a degree in Human Performance from the University of Alabama in August of 2003.
Royer resides in Huntsville and has a son, Grady, and a daughter, Collette.
